Big Bang Bragging Rights… At What Cost?

Forget the current administration, forget global warming, french fries, cigarettes, and not wearing your seatbelt; a f#*kin’ smart guy may be to blame for your end (and… everyone else’s??).

I’ve had people trying to get me to read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown for years, so I finally picked it up a few weeks ago (despite the literary snob in me resisting) and have made it about a quarter-way into it.  Basically, so far a guy from CERN had created a particle accelerator in order to prove the Big Bang Theory  – well tonight, my husband calls me over to check out an article: World’s biggest scientific experiment - an article about a guy who creates a particle accelerator in order to prove the Big Bang Theory… and the first thing I said was “is this a real article?”

The literary connection was interesting… but then I got to this part and it suddenly became more (or less) than amusing:

a handful of scientists believe that the experiment could create a shower of unstable black holes that could “eat” the planet from within, and they are launching last-ditch efforts to halt it in the courts.

on which German scientist Otto Rossler coommented, “Nothing will happen for at least four years.”

That’s nice.  Four years.  2012.  You know, the year in which the Mayan calendar ends.

Now I don’t want to sound like an alarmist here… but I have to admit it’s all a tad worrisome!  I don’t know about you, but in my opinion, if there’s even a remote chance that this experiment could create a shower of unstable black holes that could “eat” the planet from within… then YOU SHOULDN’T DO IT!

F#*kin’ smart guys… ;)
