So I spent many wee hours of this week’s nights redesigning it - and here’s what I came up with. This iceberg image, which I purchased from iStockPhoto.com, seemed perfect for the feel of the site so I ended up designing the entire site around it, and really liked the blue tones I ended up with. I also aimed at making it much more visual than before, both theme-wise and post-wise.

I’ve been working on creating some new sites over topics I really enjoy (as opposed to some boring ones I have done in the past) and am focusing on high quality articles and images on them. I had hired writers before who had done some mediocre work that I posted anyway since I’d paid for it. But now I’ve found some wonderful writers and am starting anew – no more mediocre content!

Plus, I’ve created a new magazine-style WordPress theme that I’ll be using on these sites – more on these to follow! I went ahead and used it on a small mythology site I’ve had for a while.

Of course, it’s not going terribly fast, I am doing this between working, spending time with the family, keeping up with the house, and a tiny bit of hobby time.

I was recently asked to convert a site to WordPress and I went ahead and did it at no charge, and then I started thinking that if I can do it as a favor for someone then I should really take the time to do it with my baby site (i.e. my first site and still my favorite to this day – onetimesone.com), so I spent the last week doing that.

Implementing the design into WordPress wasn’t the hard part, mostly because I’ve had some experience creating WordPress Themes, it’s been copying and pasting the hundreds of pages of content that’s been the most time consuming.

But it’s sooooo worth it! I had neglected this site for so long because it was just getting too annoying posting new reviews and interviews in html/php and then linking everything up by hand… the reviewers were writing faster than I could post things and so I just pretty much ignored the site for a very long time

But now (after I catch up on some maintenance on some other sites) I can get back into things and hopefully get OTO rolling again. I still haven’t posted everything… I’m slowly working on it, and I still haven’t decided where to put the photo gallery or the fan sites which are separate issues in themselves… but I think this is a great site renovation and necessary for any site that’s going to be kept up regularly. Plus I owe it to all of the great contributors we’ve had!

I thought about doing it with some of my other sites that are doing fairly well (business-wise) but I’m not totally happy with all of the content on those (I hired some not-so-great writers and just kept that content up on those anyway since I’d paid for it) so I’ve also been purchasing some new domains to just start over on those topics.

While I was there I even took some time to polish up the graphics and once again I’m excited about the site! I also added an Adsense ad in the left sidebar to help cover costs only it’s annoying because it keeps showing a Pizza Hut ad, haha, is that really targeting that audience??

And here I thought that I would never like a fully colorful (and dark at that!) WordPress theme – but Design Disease proved me wrong. They just gave their site a facelift – it’s colorful, it’s dark, and it’s absolutely beautiful – it’s “Sky, Land and Water.” They really came up with an innovative way to design with bold colors with this one:

null

Now if only they’d offer that as one of their free themes

It makes me wish I had more time to devote to designing WP themes… that 8-hour job really cuts into my day… good thing I enjoy it.
