James Elgie Beals was born on April 24th, 1889 to James Francis Beals and Olive Samantha Bower on a farm in Richland Township, PA. He had two older sisters, Minta and Florence and was a member of Old Zion Methodist Church in Emlenton, PA. He married Winnifred May Kline on October 12th, 1910 at her home. They went on to have four children together: James Loy Beals, Ella May Beals, Bertha Irene Beals, and Robert Elgie Beals.

Robert Elgie Beals, 75, of Emlenton RD 1, a founding member and longtime fire chief of Marion Township Fire Department, Butler County, died at 2:02 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Emlenton's Laurel Manor after a brief illness. Born Nov. 13, 1926, on the family homestead in Richland Township, Venango County, he was the son of James Elgie and Winnifred Mae Kline Beals. Mr. Beals attended East Home School and was a 1944 graduate of Emlenton High School. He was an automotive mechanic and truck driver. He first worked for his brother at J. Loy Beals Garage in Emlenton and next was employed by T.V. Sloan in Clintonville. In 1956, he and Robert McElhinney joined partnership and opened a garage in Boyers. They continued in business together until 1980. Mr. Beals then drove a milk tanker for Ila Hunsberger of Emlenton RD and Fairview Cheese Co. of Fredonia, Pa., until his retirement due to ill health. He was a member for more than 50 years of the Old Zion United Methodist Church of Disslers Corners, West Home Road, Emlenton, where he served as an usher, teacher and trustee. Mr. Beals was active in the Emlenton Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1940s, the Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1950s and was instrumental in starting the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department in Boyers, where he served as fire chief for many years. He was a member of the Boyers Sportsman Club for many years. He was married in Lickingville on Aug. 31, 1951, to Sara Elizabeth Sheesley, who died Sept. 15, 1999. Surviving are a son, Charles E. Beals of St. Petersburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy E. and Charles Walls of Emlenton RD; five grandchildren, Mrs. Gary (Robin) Schick of Emlenton RD, Mrs. James (Catherine) Blauser of Oil City RD, Caren Walls of State College, and Charles R. and Emily Beals of St. Petersburg; a great-grandson, Robert Lee Schick; a stepgranddaughter, Tina Walls Myers, and a step-great-granddaughter, Kandy Myers, of West Branch, Mich. Also surviving are two sisters, Ella Wilson of Florence, Ala., and Bertha Chambers and her husband, Wayne, of Kossuth; nine nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Beals was preceded in death by a brother, J. Loy Beals; and a great-grandson, Travis James Blauser. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Christopher M. Mile Funeral Home, Emlenton, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Old Zion United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. David Parker, United Methodist minister, officiating. Interment will be in the Zion-Union Cemetery at Emlenton RD 1. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that friends make donations to their local volunteer fire departments, the Old Zion United Methodist Church or to the Venango County 4-H Development Committee.

J. Loy Beals operated garage at Emlenton

James Loy Beals, 66, of Emlenton, owner and operator of the Beals Garage in that community, was stricken by a heart attack and dies suddenly Wednesday.

Mr. Beals was pronounced dead at the scene at the Emlenton RD 3 residence of Carmel Thompson, where he had been cultivating a garden when stricken ill.

A native of the Emlenton area, he was born Feb. 8, 1912, a son of Elgie and Winifred Kline Beals. His business had been in operation in Emlenton for the past 32 years and Mr. Beals was widely known in the community for his generosity to the sick or needy.

Surviving are his wife, the former Oral Latchaw; his father, Elgie Beals of Emlenton RD 1; two sons, James E. Beals of Jacksonville, Fla., and R. Larry Beals, Broken Arrow, Okla.; one daughter, Mrs. Denny (Janie) Wolfe of Parker RD 3; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Also surviving are a brother, Robert Beals, Emlenton RD 1, and two sisters, Mrs. John (Ella) Wilson of Scottsboro, Ala., and Mrs. Wayne (Bertha) Chambers, Kossuth.

Friends may call at the Robert F. Criswell Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Daryl R. Nicklow, pastor of the St. Petersburg Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Interment will be in the Emlenton Cemetery.

Mrs. Beals, 78, Emlenton RD 1, Dies Yesterday

EMLENTON - Mrs. Winifred May Beals, 78, at Emlenton RD 1, wife of Elgie Beals, died at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday in the Franklin Hospital soon after she was admitted.

She had been ill for a long period of time.

Born March 10, 1888, at Emlenton RD 1, she was the daughter of John and Ella Frederick Kline.

On October 12, 1910, she married Elgie Beals. He survives.

She was a member of the Old Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Ladies Aid and Missionary Society of that church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Mrs. John (Ella) Wilson of Scottsboro, Alabama, Loy Beals of Emlenton, Mrs. Wayne (Bertha) Chambers of Kossuth and Robert Beals of Emlenton RD 1; one brother, Frederick Kline of Rimersburg; one sister, Mrs. Harold (Mary) Fillgrove of Mariasville; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grand-children.

Two sisters, Mrs. Austin (Anna) Sheffer and Mrs. Otis (Gladys) Sheffer, and one great-grandchild preceded her in death.

Removal was made to the Criswell Funeral Home in Emlenton, where friends are being received.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home, with Rev. Fred Doverspike officiating.

Burial will follow in the Old Zion Church Cemetery.

J. Elgie Beals, 92, a former Emlenton RD 1 resident, died at 10 p.m. Thursday at the home of his daughter, Bertha Chambers of Kossuth.

He had made his home there for some time.

Born on April 24, 1889, in Richland Township, Venango County, he was the son of James F. and Olive Bower Beals.

He married Winnifred Kline on October 12, 1910. She preceded him in death on May 4, 1966.

Mr. Beals was a member of Old Zion Methodist Church of Emlenton RD 1.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. John (Ella) Wilson of Scottsboro, Ala., and Mrs. Wayne (Bertha) Chambers of Kossuth; a son, Robert Beals of Emlenton RD 1; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Beals was preceded in death by: a son, Loy Beals, in 1978; a great-grandson, Donald Beals; two sisters; a half-brother; and a half-sister.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the William N. Rupert Funeral Home in Knox.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Wilbert Beck, pastor of Old Zion United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Old Zion Cemetery.
