Thodupuzha: The ashes of Congress leader PT Thomas will be buried Monday evening in his mother’s tomb in a cemetery at Upputhode Church in Idukki District, in accordance with the wishes of the late Member of the Thrikkakkara Legislative Assembly .
A procession, christened PT Thomas smithi yatra, carrying the ashes began at 7 a.m. from Thomas’ house at Palarivattom in Kochi. Members of his family handed the ashes to the Deputy Chairman of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, VP Sajeendran, in the presence of opposition leader VD Satheesan.
The urn containing the ashes is now carried on an open vehicle and facilities have been set up for the public to pay their respects at various locations along the route. When the procession reached Neriyamangalam after covering the Ernakulam district, the ashes would be received by CP Mathew, chairman of the Idukki district congress committee.
The ashes are expected to arrive at Upputhode around 4 p.m. and will be handed over to Thomas’ relatives at the chapel there. A canopy has been installed on the premises of St Thomas’ Church, Upputhode, to pay tribute to the public. Later relatives of the late leader buried the ashes in his mother’s vault.
Meanwhile, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Idukki urged family members to maintain the sanctity of the church and cemetery while burying the ashes.
“Religious feelings should not be hurt during the process and a pious silence should be observed,” he said.
Thomas died on December 22 in a hospital in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. He was cremated according to his last wishes.
