Lady Pirates, Maidens flush with the playoffs

Eleven volleyball players Polson and Ronan received playoff honors, which were announced last week by the Northwestern A Conference and the Montana High School Association.

The Lady Pirates (10-0, 18-4) and Maidens (8-2, 17-6) have placed two players each in the 2021 Class A squad.

Polson seniors Camilla Foresti and Liz Tolley have been named to the All-State squad, along with Ronan seniors Olivia Clairmont and LaReina Cordova.

Polson’s head coach Lizzy Cox was named coach of the year after his team won the Northwest A crown and the Western A championship.

Polson just ended the 2021 season with a third place finish at the Bozeman State Tournament. The Lady Pirates were 16-2 before entering the state and were the No. 1 seed in the West. The Maidens were the No. 2 seed. The two teams have met four times this season. Polson swept two regular season games and the teams shared two games in the divisional tournament in Ronan.

Also receiving top honors for Polson were sophomore Avery Starr, first-team all-conference; sophomore Mckenna Hanson, conference second all-star; and juniors Clara Todd and Grace Simonich, who received honorable mentions from all conferences.

The other Ronan winners were: Rylie Lindquist senior, conference second all-star team; junior Leina Ulutoa, second team of all conferences; and an honorable mention for junior Margaret Cordova.

Foresti, a foreign exchange student from Italy, recorded over 50 aces with devastating jump serve and had over 250 defensive digs in the regular season. Including tournaments, she managed almost 300 wins for Polson.

Tolley also had over 200 kills and led the team in blocks.

Starr was Polson’s primary table dresser, with around 450 sets. She was also among the best servers on the team, registering over 40 aces.

Hanson recorded nearly 200 kills in the regular season and was a key defenseman with almost 200 digs.

Todd was the team’s second blocker and managed over 100 kills.

The versatile Simonich has racked up dozens of wins and aces while racking up more than 200 assists and 100 digs.

Clairmont was Ronan’s best blocker and a serious offensive threat at net. It was the second recognition of any conference for Clairmont, an honorable mention last season.

LaReina Cordova, was one of the Maidens’ best hitters. She was also among the team leaders in the digs and pulled off several dozen aces during the season.

Lindquist led the Maidens with nearly 300 digs and over 120 kills during the regular season. This was the second all-conference nomination for Lindquist, an honorable mention last season.

Ulutoa led the offensive with nearly 500 assists. She was also a team leader for kills, aces and blocks, and recorded over 160 digs. She was also named in the second team last season.

Margaret Cordova was a key defensive player who kept the ball alive with over 250 digs.
