Pierre Gasly vs Esteban Ocon at Alpine – who will be the team leader? Will they clash? | F1
Gasly and Ocon will form an all-French team of 2023 F1 drivers for Alpine, the French team, rekindling their childhood friendship which has since turned sour.
Gasly has signed a multi-year deal to join AlphaTauri as a replacement for Fernando Alonso.
“Esteban will think he’s the team boss because he’s part of the furniture now,” the former F1 driver di Resta said on Sky.
“But Pierre will come and see what Fernando was able to do against Esteban. Fernando has this wealth of experience.
“Pierre arrives thinking that he is the chosen one.
“That’s where they will meet. It will be comfortable to start with. But at some point, they will find themselves on the track.
“It depends on what the management says: ‘It’s acceptable, it’s not’.
“They can thrive. They can have the competition to move the team forward.
Jenson Button added: “French drivers in a French team? I don’t know if it will be like at Ferrari, with Italian drivers in an Italian team. Not an easy atmosphere.
Alonso was among the highest paid on the F1 driver salary list this season but, after Alpine lost his salary, they will replace him with Gasly.
Gasly and Ocon currently earn around £4.1million in 2022, but their wages next year could indicate their seniority in Alpine’s eyes.
Gasly will be replaced by Nyck de Vries, who will partner Yuki Tsunoda, at AlphaTauri next season.
Ocon shone in qualifying for the F1 Japanese Grand Prix and will start fifth, with Gasly 17th.
