Singapore youth record holder Gan Ching Hwee commits to Indiana for spring 2022

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of the SwimSwam College Recruitment Channel and all engagement news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them on their journey.

Member of the Singapore national team, Gan Ching Hwee announced that she would join Indiana University in the spring of 2022, immediately after graduating from high school in December. Hwee holds two junior national records in Singapore, as she is currently the fastest under-17 in history in the 800 and 1500, as well as the senior national record in the 1500. She currently trains with the Swimfast Aquatic Club in Singapore. .

“I am very happy to announce my verbal commitment to Indiana University to further my college and swimming career! I chose IU because of the strong team culture and the wonderful facilities to train and study. I am also incredibly grateful for the support of my family, friends and coaches. I can’t wait to be part of this amazing team !! GO TO THE SLIPPERS! ️🤍 ”

She has represented Singapore internationally on several occasions, most recently at the World Championships in 2019. In that competition, her best result was the 1500 freestyle, where she finished 21st with a time of 16: 44.65.

In Singapore’s Olympic qualification last December, she finished with the fastest time in three events. Sweeping distance races, she won the 400 freestyle (4: 19.07), the 800 freestyle (8: 51.35) and the 1500 freestyle (16: 57.88). She was also second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2: 03.86.

Best LCM times (SCY conversion)

  • 200 free – 2: 01.88 (1: 46.91)
  • 400 free – 4: 16.42 (4: 47.30)
  • 800 free – 8: 42.23 (9: 45.13)
  • 1500 free – 16: 33.54 (16: 14.05)

Indiana has just completed a season that saw them finish third at the Big Ten Championships behind Ohio State and Michigan. While the Hoosiers weren’t weak in free distance races, events weren’t their strongest either. In 1650, they were ahead of 40 points by Michigan.

Last year, the Hoosier distance group was led by Josie grote and Ella Ristique in the 1650s and 500s, respectively. While Grote will be graduating this year, Ristic was just a freshman last season, giving him and Hwee two and a half years of overlap.

Hwee will immediately bolster Indiana’s distance squad, as his times were only just behind the team’s fastest last season. With her conversion time, she would have been only 0.3 slower than Josie Grote in 1650 at the NCAA Championships. In that race, Grote finished 17th, narrowly missing out on scoring points in the race.
